SABINS Public School Data

The National Center for Education Statistics' Common Core of Data (CCD) contains information about the fiscal and non-fiscal characteristics of schools in the United States. It is collected and released annually.

SABINS-to-Common Core of Data Crosswalk Tables

The school attendance boundaries contained in the SABINS database do not have a one-to-one match with schools in the CCD. Some attendance boundaries are served by multiple schools, and some schools serve multiple attendance boundaries. The SABINS project has created a series of crosswalk tables that link attendance boundaries to schools in the CCD. Instructions on using the crosswalk tables can be found in the Using SABINS and CCD guide. The crosswalk tables are available for each grade level (Kindergarten through 12th grade) in SABINS, and can be downloaded using the following links:

Kindergarten crosswalk, (2009-10) (2010-11) (2011-12)

SABINS-to-Census 2010 Block Crosswalk Tables

Common Core of Data, 2009-2010

The 2009-2010 school year National Center for Education Statistics' Common Core of Data file archive contain data tables and syntax files for use in popular statistics packages. The codebook describing the field names and content can be found here. Use this dataset to join school-level data to school attendance boundaries through the SABINS-to-CCD crosswalk tables.

School Location Shapefiles

The National Center for Education Statistics' Common Core of Data contains latitute and longitude coordinates for schools in the dataset. SABINS staff created point shapefiles for the schools.

SABINS-to-Common Core of Data Crosswalk Tables (Prior Releases)

The SABINS project first released data for the 2009-2010 school year in October 2011 and a second released followed in September 2012. For people who have to older data and need access to the crosswalks, they are still available. We do, however, recommend that people use the most recent data for 2009-2010 (released in April 2013) because it contains the most accurate information.

SABINS Companion Tables (Prior Release)

SABINS created, for the original October 2011 release, a series of companion tables that contained attributes on the number of magnet, charter, and private schools that fall within a school attendance boundary, a URL to the original GIS data obtained from school districts or state departments of education, the Local Education Agency ID, the boundary ID, the grade level, and more. These tables were not updated with the subsequent data releases of September 2012 and April 2013, and they are only useable by those still using the original October 2011 data. These tables may be requested by contacting the SABINS user support.

School Assignment Policies

We collected data on school assignment policies from the largest 350 school districts, based on the number of enrolled public school students from the 2009-2010 NCES Common Core of Data, in the United States in May 2012. These policies describe how students were assigned to schools within the district. We coded the policies for elementary school assignments, and the codebook describing the dataset is here. The ZIP file has the dataset in Excel, dBase, Stata, and comma-separated text formats. Many of the core policies and documents gathered from school districts are available in the "assignment & enrollment policies.zip" file available here.
